Three Tiered Skirts

Way back in 2010, my cousin, Laura gave me a huge sewing bug after she made some adorable skirts for her girls. I had to follow suit, and soon found myself knee deep in fabric and multiple patterns. lol

sewing-making-memories-with-kids-these-are-your-days-skirts-eternal-reflections-photography-bI decided to start small/basic with this Three Tiered skirt pattern which I LOVED! And so did Brooklyn, PLUS they were really easy to make.

And the best part? The skirts live on with my other cousins’ young girls.

My heart swoons

The Polka Dot Chair

I WANT TO MAKE THIS!!! Another blog found from aimless internet wandering 🙂 As we all know I’m on a bit of a skirt sewing kick – and now that the weather is turning (much to my dismay – I’m so not ready to say goodbye to the summer sunshine) I know I’ll be spending a whole lot more time at my sewing machine! This has promptly been added to my list – a fantastic tutorial from The Polka Dot Chair!

In addition, I want to make this completely adorable matching skirt for a doll :

I absolutely love both skirts (though personally prefer the fabric on the doll version) and can’t wait to try them out.

Ruffle Skirt Success…sort of! #thesearethedays #brothercanada #brotherinnovis

I’m still avoiding the quilt project from February – I know, I know…but I really just was not cut out for them. So instead of worrying about it, I scoured through my Pinterest Crafting and Sewing board to find something new for my March project.

This GOOOOORGEOUS Anthropologie inspired ruffled pencil skirt from Elizabeth Ave won – I’m sure you can see why *heart eyes*

I knew exactly what fabric to use because I’ve had it in my sewing room for over a year – Originally purchased to make a skirt with it but without knowing which one. Sometimes things are just meant to be…and sometimes buying random fabric pays off! {Consider that your permission to do it…you’re welcome lol}

So I set to work. The pattern is based on measurements and basic square/rectangular pieces, which is both nice and more work all at the same time. haha I plan to make some standard pattern pieces so it’s easier in the future because I’m anticipating a closet full of the same skirt. *covers eyes*

The back panel of the skirt is two separate pieces. In an effort to prove that miracles still happen, I made sure that the pattern connected on both pieces {holla}.

Which humorously left me with a hole in the center of this yard. Obviously it’s best to avoid this scenario, and in the future I will cut the pieces in a different order to do so, but this is how it had to be. Plus, I have 2 more yards of fabric so it’s not a dealbreaker!

The ruffle along the back had me a wee bit concerned. I’m such a rookie with my sewing skills and really do prefer high margins of error, but I have to say I’m so happy with how it turned out. Yes, I am sure it could be better and as I make my hundred other versions {ha!} I anticipate becoming a master, but for now….this girl is pretty happy.

zipper

Can we just take a minute and ooh and ahh over this gorgeous zipper? I mean…I can’t even. IIIIII did that ~ Me!!!! I actually think this is the first time I’ve ever put a zipper in – if you haven’t done one either, please know they are NOT SCARY AT ALL!

I would like to change the waist as I didn’t really do it properly and it’s not an awesome fit {hence the *sort of* in the post title}, buuuuuuut my shirt covered it…and I’m still so ridiculously in love with this skirt!

Fancy Stitches ~ My New Love #thesearethedays #sewingfun #brothercanada #brotherinnovis

Sitting down at my sewing table and having NO idea what to create {because I’m avoiding the quilt still} turned out to be a pretty awesome opportunity.

I stared at my fabric piles, ate half the candy in my drawer {an idea I stole from one of my best friends, who stole the idea from her mama haha}, and stared longingly at the machine waiting for some inspiration.

And then it hit me.

Look at all those stitch options *cue heart eyes*

I grabbed a piece of knit fabric and started to play!

I know, some seem a little weird and I’m not totally sure when I’d use them, buuuut still so fun to try them out 🙂

I love a few more from this set and plan to play around a lot with them on different projects. Watch for them! 😉

Oh I looooove these ones! It’s entirely possible part of it is the one on the left reminds me of palm trees – Obviously I’d be in love. haha

I think this one would be so pretty on a little girl’s shirt sleeve or skirt hem, don’t you agree?

One thing I love about the computer screen on the Brother Innov-is, is that it tells you in the top left corner which foot to use for the stitch selected. Takes the guess work out of it, which this girl is a HUGE fan of! Love me a computerized machine!!!!

Yes, I’m still in love.

Doll Quilts with #AveryLaneSewing and the #BrotherInnovis ~ #thesearethedays #sewingfun

I think I’ve overestimated my sewing skills. Seriously.

I had the bright idea to use this adorable coordinating fabric set for an 18″ doll quilt. In fact, so bright was my idea that I cut enough pieces for THREE quilts. THREE people.

THREE.

I typically do projects with a reasonably high margin of error. I have bad sewing habits and am not nearly as detail oriented as I ought to be, but I have been determined to change this. And I made every effort from the very start of this project to do it right.

Do you see those pins? Yeah, I used them! *holla*

On every single piece I was sewing, I used pins. I told you people, this girl’s making changes!

cute like me avery lane sewing bonjour quilt these are the days brother canada brother sewing sewing fun

{shameless plug} I seriously LOVE sewing with the Brother Innovis. I cannot even explain properly just how beautiful of a machine it is and how smoothly it pulls the fabric through. I never want to live without her. Not ever.

cute like me avery lane sewing bonjour quilt these are the days brother canada brother sewing sewing fun

Of course, using pins gave me a certain arrogance that led me to believe I had this in the bag. HA! Just 6 steps in I realized I had missed step 5. HOW?! WHY?!

It’s just not fair people. It seems I am incapable of doing a sewing project without pulling out this little seam ripper at least once! *cries*

So back to the *almost* start and I was off again, working ever so diligently to complete the first square of the Bonjour Quilt from Avery Lane Sewing {Etsy}.

And then THIS happened:

cute like me avery lane sewing bonjour quilt these are the days brother canada brother sewing sewing fun And that right there is the bane of my sewing existence.

I gave up. I threw it all away.

Okay, I kid…I didn’t and I am determined to actually figure this out. But for now I did put it away so I could take a breather and stop hating my sewing life! hahaha….there are some things the Brother Innovis can’t fix, apparently 😉

Stupid seams….*bangs head*

Why You Need a Brother! #brotherinnovis #sewingfun #brothercanada #thesearethedays

I promise you I’m not just saying it, but you really need a Brother.

Seriously.

And my lovely cousin, Laura would agree. Earlier this year, while watching her two younger kids, I made her daughter a couple of skirts using this adorable Girl’s Maxi Skirt Pattern from Girl Charlee.

amy skirt girl charlee these are the days sewing fun

They quickly became favourites and was shared between two of her girls (yay for knit fabric that can stretch – also from GirlCharlee). So she planned a fun little trip with her two older kids to make a few more. I’ve been raving to her about how easy they are and that they seriously take 20 minutes to make, so she had high expectations.

And then she started sewing on her machine.

You know when you spend more time starting and stopping, rethreading and troubleshooting to figure out the heck is wrong this time?! She spent about 15 minutes in this run around, not too hopeful about making progress on skirt #1.

And then she started sewing on my machine.

It was like the heavens opened and the sewing angels poured their happiness all over. Scoff if you want, but it’s true. She was immediately sold and spent the next 20 minutes finishing the first skirt while saying things like:

*Oh my word, no wonder you love sewing*

*Now I know why it only takes you 20 minutes*

*It’s so quiet and smooth*

*Now I need one of these*

Flat out in love. And I could only sit, grinning cheek to cheek and nod along in agreement. I am also flat out in love with this machine. And she really did it….she made 3 skirts (and a tank top) for her 8 year old and each project honestly only took about 20 minutes, start to finish.

It was the perfect little afternoon of sewing and I’m certain it’s only the first of many get togethers we have. This Brother machine better get ready – these two cousins are going to rock its world!

Coachella Shorts #brotherinnovis #brothercanada #thesearethedays #Coachellashorts

When I saw these shorts made by iCandy Handmade, I was immediately in love.

coachella shorts striped swallow designs icandy handmade these are the days

In fact, I went to the fabric store the very next day to grab embellishments {I’m trying to be responsible and use up fabric I already have…I know, sad!} and purchased the pattern from Striped swallow Designs so that I could get started right away.

Now let me tell you – the pattern is ridiculously easy. Which is probably why it took me ALL night to figure it out. *sigh* I made some assumptions based on how I thought the leg *flap* worked, and as a result, I did it wrong SEVERAL times over. I mean, SO wrong. Embarrassingly wrong. I’m so glad I didn’t photograph the process.

I finally, FINALLY figured it out ~ by actually following the instructions, who’d have thought ~ and was so excited with how they turned out. I was also incredibly relieved that all my sewing, seam ripping and re-sewing {and repeat} didn’t destroy the fabric. I give all the credit to the fabulous Brother Innovis machine that I’m lucky enough to get to sew with. I promise there are more machine details to come…she really needs a post all to herself!

As you can see, the shorts are a bit big for Brooklyn and she finds the trim seam a little itchy (so I plan to figure out a way to cover it), but aren’t they adorable?!

coachella shorts 2 cute like me these are the days striped swallow designs icandy handmade brother innovis brother canada

I have several other adorable fabrics that I have big plans for in the Coachella shorts department…I can’t wait to do a sewing marathon, sometime in the spring perhaps {when I’m not busy dreading the upcoming snow!}. Brooklyn’s closet is going to be overflowing!

Now I’m missing summer. 🙁

My new favourite kids dress #playalldaydress #brotherinnovis #brothercanada #thesearethedays

August has been filled with beaches, camping, pools and lots of sewing {on the beautiful Brother Innov-is} ! I kept my living room set up as my sewing room and enjoyed multiple Netflix marathons while sewing my little heart out. I’m anxious to play around with the embroidery features, but couldn’t stop making shirts for myself and several of the play all day dress for Brooklyn. Can you blame me?

palm tree play all day dress its always autumn these are the days cute like me girl charlee

I used to make Brooklyn a towel dress each year {from a blog that no longer exists}, but this dress has quickly become the replacement. It’s so easy and fast…two pieces to cut out, plus elastic, and in about half an hour you’ll have the cutest play dress that can double as a swim cover. I’ve made Brooklyn 3 now and they’ve pretty much become her summer uniform.

Every Day Play Dress cute like me these are the days brother innovis brother canada

I prefer to order my knit fabric from Girl Charlee {prices and selection *heart*}, but I found these two are my local fabric store and they were practically screaming at me to be made into dresses…add to that the prices were surprisingly reasonable, and it was a no brainer.

these are the days its always autumn play all day dress cute like me broter innovis brother canada 2 edit

I also had just enough coral/oatmeal stripe fabric {Girl Charlee} to make one for Brooklyn’s friend. They had fun at the outdoor pool sporting their *not matching but matching* dresses.

I have some serious plans to make dozens of these…DOZENS!

Sewing tip: If you are like me and don’t like to be overly meticulous {terrible, I know}, I recommend starting with striped fabric. It’s so much easier to sew the elastic on in a straight line, when you have a stripe to follow.

Otherwise, have fun! If you make one {or some}, share your photos on instagram and tag me @theseareyourdays. Also, don’t forget to give credit to @itsalwaysautumnblog and hashtag with #playalldaydress. I know she’d love to see your creations too!

T-shirts, T-shirts, Ra-Ra-Ra! #sewingfun #brotherinnovis #brothercanada #thesearethedays

I’m feeling a little jipped ~ how have I spent all these years not knowing that making shirts could be so easy and fun? Now that I know, it’s all I want to do. I’ve discovered a new love for knit fabric as is evidenced by the mounds that have taken over several areas of our house *oops*

And I still want more…

It all started with a post on Pinterest called *17 Absolutely Free Tshirt Sewing Patterns*  more specifically with the adorable Fun Summer Tee from iCandy Handmande. I was a bit leery at first because, quite frankly, my sewing skills are mediocre at best. But I forged ahead and was THRILLED with the results. Now if only I could have the same luck with my photography skills *eep*

I LOVED the floral/stripes combination shown on the iCandy Handmade post, I knew I had to start there. And oh my sweet goodness, I love the way it turned out. In fact, I have to force myself not to wear this particular shirt every.single.day. #truestory

I wore this to work the next day and then just a couple of days later for a day spent with the in laws. In the hot summer weather, it was perfectly comfortable and airy.

I couldn’t decide with my other floral whether to pair it with white or pink, so I did both. Ha!

The pink one needs a bit of tweaking ~ I’m not loving the fit just yet, but I do love the combination. 🙂

The other day a couple of fabrics laying together caught my eye…coral stripe and lime green. I love colour ~ bright, happy colour ~ so I went for it. I feel a little like a watermelon, but the combination just makes me smile.

watermelon fun summer tee icandy handmade these are the days brother canada brother innovis

The Fun Summer Tee Pattern is so ridiculously easy to follow, I didn’t have to make any adjustments {except the pink one above}. Often times when sewing thin fabric like this, I have issues with it getting caught in the machine. But I was so happy to discover that wasn’t a problem with the Brother Innov-is. It seriously feeds the fabric through so nicely. My ultimate plan is to master the art of the double needle {the best option for knits}, I just haven’t taken the time to venture there yet. #chicken

I am having so much fun and as a result, my closet it about to be bursting at the seams…I mean, more than it already is, of course. 😉

{Go make one…or a dozen}

Reversible Sling Bags with the Brother Innov-is #sewingfun #brotherinnovis #thesearethedays #sugarbeecrafts

For years I’ve had several coordinating fabric sets just waiting to be used, so when I saw this project on Pinterest I knew I had to give it a try. So I set out to make one.

What I didn’t anticipate was making 5.

sewing troubles

I printed out the Reversible Sling Bag Pattern from Sugar Bee Crafts. I didn’t have enough of the fabric to cut the pieces on the fold, so I tried cutting 4 separate pieces instead {which I’ve since discovered I prefer anyways}. For some reason this had me all sorts of turned around and I ended up cutting pieces the wrong way and sewing them together wrong {so weird}, which resulted in becoming well acquainted with the seam ripper. #frustrating

Literally hours were spent on this first one and although there is no real rhyme or reason to the placement of the 3 different fabrics, I love how it turned out.

cross body bag 2I mean, how cute it this!!!!

I knew I wanted to make another one, mainly to redeem myself. haha

I kept to my preference of not using the liner (I don’t think it needs it) and cutting 4 pieces instead of 2 (I love the way a top stitched seam looks) and set to work.

cross body bag

The seams look so clean and finished with a top stitch.

And then I made 3 more. Ha! Once I had all the pieces cut it was only about an hour to complete, due in large part to the smoothness of this awesome machine. I’m honestly in love.

Earlier in June, I was watching my cousin’s two youngest kids for the week and they both asked for one. Miss M picked the fabric for hers and was THRILLED when it was finished, wearing it everywhere we went.

cross body bag girl cute like me sugar bee crafts brother innovis

Not to be left out, her little brother also wanted one. He’s big into superheroes, so Superman was no surprise. And he was SO excited to have a bag to carry his doggy in!

cross body bag boy cute like me sugar bee crafts brother innovis

Can you see why I had to make one more?

cross body bag 3I don’t have a photo of this bag with the recipient yet, so for now here’s a swatch of the adorable Hello Kitty fabric I used.

Now my only task is to make one sized perfectly for me to use this summer as a beach bag. Not to mention the long list of sewing projects that I’m anxious to try. Just wait until I get my hands on the embroidery functions ~ *squeal*
